One night after dropping a 5-4 overtime contest in North Battleford, the Humboldt Broncos ensured a repeat would not take place.

The Broncos jumped on the Stars early in often in a 8-2 win in their first preseason game at the Elgar Petersen Arena.

After the Stars got into early penalty trouble, Logan Schatz buried the game's opening marker on a 5-on-3 advantage.

Five minutes later, the Broncos would find themselves up 3-0, after Cole Young scored his first of three goals on the night. Newcomer Conner Lukan also found the back of the net in his first game action as a Bronco, putting home a highlight pass from Schatz.

Young would add his second goal of the game with 5:20 left in the opening 20 minutes, before Teddy Prior scored a shorthanded goal late in the period to give the home side a 5-0 lead through one period.

The Stars found the scoreboard in the front half of the second period, when Michael Curran put home a goal on the man advantage.

In his first action as a Bronco, starting goalie Sam-Jaxon Visscher's night came to an end after stopping 19 of 20 shots faced. He was relieved by Rayce Ramsay, a 2016 Broncos draft pick.

The two sides went back and forth over a two and a half minute span, as Derek Patter scored on the power play to make it 6-1 Humboldt. Ryan Rothenburger replied a minute later for Battlefords.

Young would score his third goal of the game for the Broncos with under three minutes to play in the middle frame, putting his team up 7-2.

The third period saw less action, with the two teams riding out the finish. The Broncos added one more goal off the stick of defenseman Stephen Wack, who scored the third power play tally of the night for Humboldt.

Overall, the Broncos finished the night three for seven on the man advantage, holding the Stars to one goal on four attempts.

A second and final preseason home game comes Friday night, when Humboldt welcomes Melfort. The two teams conclude the exhibition season Saturday night back at the Northern Lights Palace.
