Another first period deficit was too much to overcome Saturday in Weyburn for the Humboldt Broncos as they fell 3-1 to the Red Wings.

Riding a five game winless streak and coming off a tough 4-2 home to the Battlefords North Stars Friday, the green and gold wanted a fast start against the Wings at Crescent Point Place, the same building that their season ended last year.

They did have some jump in the opening ten minutes going back and forth with the Viterra division leading club squad. A lapse in the middle portion of the period saw them get down a pair, Ian Parker snapped a low wrist shot past Billy Gorn making it 1-0 at 10:01, then Cole Woodliffe beat Gorn with a sharp angle shot that the Broncos' newcomer would like to have back.

"I thought we played five bad minutes tonight and that was about it," Assistant Coach Brayden Klimosko said on the post-game show of KMK Sales Broncos' hockey. "They're a good hockey team, we let them off the hook on the first goal and then it was a weak one by our goalie on the second one. After that we really played pretty good, it was a pretty good game by us."

The score remained 2-0 Weyburn until the third when the Wings would get the dagger, Jacob Jeske banged a rebound past Gorn just prior to the ten minute mark of the final frame making it 3-0.

The Broncos would bust up Jack Burgart's shutout in the last minute, Daniel Mckitrick stepped from the corner and lifted it under the crossbar for his 10th goal of the season making it 3-1. Logan Schatz was given the lone assist.

Burgart made 25/26 saves for the victory, Gorn allowed the three goals on 33 shots.

Humboldt's record is now 7-17-4, they are in 11th place in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League standings.

As positive as the play has been lately, Klimosko said they need to start winning games which he says will be soon.

"I think before you start winning you've got to start playing good. A week ago I wasn't sure we would ever get out of this to be honest, that's being very honest. At least now we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. If you play like this and play with the passion that we are we are going to start winning some hockey games, I truly believe that."

Each team finished 0/3 on the power play.

The Broncos will return to action on Tuesday night in Nipawin when they meet the Hawks. The pre-game show begins at 7:15, puck drop is 7:30.
