Hometown goaltender Jacob Wasserman has been playing some great hockey in his first season in the SJHL. Through 19 games, he has a .910 save percentage, and has a goals against average of 2.52.

He's playing so well that Hockey Canada has invited him to take part in a training camp to try out for Team West for the upcoming World Junior A Challenge.

"I got the phone call about a week ago," Wasserman said. "It's just an invite right now, we'll see what happens. I go to Calgary on Saturday, I'll do my best at the camp and if I make it, we go to Nova Scotia to play in a tournament and play against the rest of the Junior A players around the world."

Wasserman says he was thrilled when he found out he was invited to the training camp.

"I was very excited, a little bit surprised actually too that I was getting it. But it's a great opportunity and everybody of course wants to put on the jersey for their country."

The camp begins on Saturday and will feature 60 players from across western Canada. Five other goalies are looking for a spot on Team West.

With Wasserman growing up in Humboldt, he says it's pretty special to be able to play for your hometown team.

"I remember growing up watching them. It's always been in the back of my head to someday play for my hometown, and it's pretty cool to get that experience now."

Last year Wasserman played with the Saskatoon Blazers in AAA midget. He explains the biggest difference between the midget and junior levels.

"It's just the speed, it's a lot faster. Bodies are bigger, so things happen a lot quicker and you just have to be thinking and moving."

The Humboldt Broncos are back in action Saturday night when they host the Yorkton Terriers.
