The Broncos left a good impression on the hometown fans prior to the Christmas break when they doubled Melfort 4-2, their first contest at the Elgar Petersen Arena of 2016 was just as pleasing.

Humboldt opened a two goal lead and unlike the night prior the Hawks would not climb back in this one, Humboldt routed Nipawin 6-2 to improve their record to 11-24-3-1, a point out of the playoffs.

Middle Lake product Matthew Parsons gave the fans something to cheer about just 6:05 in, five days past his 18th birthday he beat Michael Barabash for his first career Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League goal. Nikolas Malenica and Corey Dambrauskas picked up on the assists on Parson's memorable marker.

Dambrauskas would then make it 2-0, collecting his fifth of the season from Malenica. The 19 year-old Calgary product had goals in both weekend games.

Nipawin would cut the lead in half in the final minute off the stick of Evan Mignault making 2-1 going into the first break.

That goal could have turned the fortunes of the Broncos but their 19 year-old power-forward from Leduc, Trevor Posch took over in the second period.

Josh Bergen jumped on a rebound in front getting his second of the year while reinstating the two goal cushion. Josh Roberts grabbed the lone helper.

Posch would then deposit a pretty pass from Schatz making it 4-1 then he slapped a rebound to the top corner scoring his 10th goal and second straight opening up a 5-1 gap going to the third.

Schatz would make it 6-1 from Michael Korol and Posch early in the third.

Brendan Kallis would beat Ryan LaRochelle late to make it 6-2 but that's as close as the Hawks would come.

Parsons said after the game they were due for a big one.

"From the effort Friday night carrying into tonight as well, it was nice to see all the guys pull together and pull out the win like we did."

The Broncos special teams were simply that Saturday night, the Broncos were 2/4 on the power-play, Nipawin went 0/5 and also missed a penalty shot early in the second period when it was 2-1 which turned out to be huge as Humboldt scored on the power-play they were on when the free shot was called.

Their play away from the net such as late blocked shots and bone jarring hits were also aspects Parsons appreciated.

"Guys making big plays like that no matter what the score may be it shows how you will end up in the end."

LaRochelle finished with 22 saves, Barabash was pulled for the second straight game, he allowed five goals on 15 shots, Kristian Stead came on in relief again allowing one goal on five Bronco chances.

Humboldt returns to action on Tuesday when they host the Notre Dame Hounds at 7:30. It's Toonie Tuesday, anybody 18 and under gets in for $2.
