The Humboldt Broncos will have a new top scorer for the 2017-2018 season.

As training camp opened on Thursday, the Broncos announced that they dealt 20-year-old forward Chris Van Os-Shaw to the Spruce Grove Saints of the Alberta Junior Hockey League.

In return, the Broncos acquired 20-year-old forward Conner Lukan.

"Chris did ask for a trade, so we tried to accommodate him. We've been working hard on that all summer, and when we were doing our homework, Lukan was the kid that really stood out," explained Broncos Head Coach and General Manager Darcy Haugan.

"We wanted to find a left-handed shot that could play with Logan Schatz and could skate and compete and maybe do some things that Chris wasn't really good at," said Haugan. "We feel that he will be a really good fit with Logan (Schatz)."

Van Os-Shaw was brought to the Broncos when the club traded Jarrett Fontaine to Weyburn during the 2015-16 year to allow the hometown product a chance to compete in the playoffs.

In 72 total regular season games with Humboldt, Van Os-Shaw netted 46 goals and 90 points.

Haugan says that while the big stats are always nice, there is more to the game.

"If you look at the stats sheet, it can be misleading at times, and if you dive into more of the advanced stats, we feel like we really got the better player in the deal."

Haugan continued, saying that they are looking forward to the leadership Lukan will bring to the team.

Lukan spent three seasons with the Saints, tallying 64 regular season points and 12 playoff points, ranking third on the team in goals last season with 14.
