It's been a long time since the Humboldt Broncos have won a hockey game in the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort.

In fact; the last date was March 22, 2014 when Humboldt took a 3-2 series lead over the Mustangs in their best of seven post season playoff series.

Friday night the veteran laden Broncos club took it to the now rebuilding Mustangs en route to a 6-1 win.

Second year forward Josh Roberts scored a goal plus set up a key short-handed marker from Nic Malenica during a five minute major short-handed situation.

The 19 year-old talked about how nice it was to contribute in a win over the back-to-back champions.

"It's good to get out there this year and take it to them them. Last year was a little bit different but it's a good feeling to win in this rink for sure."

Kobe Scott scored his first career SJHL goal, Daniel McKitrick, Parker Wakaruk amd Michael Korol also picked up markers.

Roberts added that the Broncos are rolling with guys scoring up and down the line up.

"It's a really good sign for our hockey club, the depth of our team is looking awesome. On nights like tonight you know maybe the first couple lines aren't clicking or whatever, it's good to know we've got four lines that can put the puck in the net."

Garrett Mason had a light night in stopping 15/16 shots. Humboldt beat Hunter Arns six times on 36 shots in the Melfort net. Derrick Hucal kicked aside both shots he faced in mop up duty.

The Broncos will quickly rebound and host Weyburn Saturday night at the Elgar Petersen Arena, face off is 7:30.

Melville fell 3-1 to Flin Flon, Estevan routed Weyburn 6-1 and Nipawin ousted LaRonge 5-2 in the three other SJHL contests.

You can hear more from Roberts below plus Brayden Klimosko's post-game comments.

McKitrick joined Clark Stork during the first intermission of the broadcast as well.
