The Humboldt Broncos had a pair of power play goals on Friday night to help them get past Melville 3-1 at the Horizon Credit Union Centre.

The Broncos opened in the latter half of the first period, scoring two goals in two minutes.

Captain Logan Schatz got the scoring started on his 10th goal of the season. Following that, Brayden Camrud had the first power play goal of the night for the Broncos, to give the visitors a 2-0 lead at that point.

Melville cut the lead to 2-1 early in the second period before Jaxon Joseph scored Humboldt's second goal on the man advantage late in the period.

Head Coach Darcy Haugan said postgame that he was pleased with how his team played.

"We kind of played into their strengths at the start of the game, and then the guys recognized it and they started to execute," he said. "Melville is a scrappy bunch, you have to be really patient against them."

Haugan said the performance of the team - especially on the back end - was among the best he has seen.

"I think this is probably the best 60 minutes defensively and structurally in my three years. Right from our penalty killing, which did a great job, and our power play came through with two big goals," he noted. "Earlier in the year we lost a lot of one goal games because we couldn't execute on the power play, and now that is coming along."

The Broncos were able to kill off a pair of 5-on-3's in the game. Early in the second period, Humboldt wiped out a near full two minute situation where they were down two men.

Later in the third period, they were able to kill off 45 seconds of a 5-on-3 situation.

Jacob Wassermann picked up the win in goal, having to face just 14 shots on goal for his 8th win of the season.

The Broncos are on home ice for their next two games, hosting Kindersley on Tuesday. Yorkton will be in town on Friday for the start of a home and home. The two teams play in Yorkton on Saturday.
