It's on to the regular season for the Humboldt Broncos.

The Broncos wrapped up the small exhibition season in Melfort on Saturday, dropping a 6-3 decision to the Mustangs.

Head Coach and General Manager Darcy Haugan noted that while winning is always the game plan, each night is typically a different look one way or another.

"Every team has a different mindset coming into every game. Some games you're playing your young guys and other teams are playing their vets and then some times you're playing your vets and they have more rookies."

Haugan is entering his third season behind the bench after the organization picked up the option on the third year of his initial contract.

After seeing improvements on the ice last season, Haugan had two more years tacked on to his deal, which will keep him in Humboldt through atleast the 2019-2020 season.

The club missed the playoffs in Haugan's first year as coach, but were able to finish fifth in the overall standings last season, and are aiming to win their division this year.

Although the SJHL preseason is scheduled throughout an eight day period, the Broncos had their exhibition time shortened even further, which has prompted Haugan and his staff to look at effort level, among other things.

"There's not a lot of structure to our game right now, reason being that we have played four games in five nights, so there isn't a lot of practice time for that," he noted. "You're throwing some basic stuff at your guys to see who competes hard and who can make some plays."

Haugan says that discussion has been made to perhaps lengthen the exhibition season.

"There has been arguments that maybe we should stretch out the preseason a little longer and that way you probably get a few less injuries and we wouldn't be pushing guys as hard," he said.

The Broncos have eight players with various injuries according to Haugan, adding that in Saturday's game at Melfort, only Antonio DiPaolo was good to play for returning defencemen.

One of the areas the Broncos will be brand new from one season ago is in goal, where the club has three goaltenders remaining.

Humboldt's own Jacob Wassermann is recently back from training camp in the Western Hockey League with the Vancouver Giants.

Wassermann played for the Saskatoon Blazers in Saskatchewan's AAA Midget League last season, appearing in 26 games. He stopped 13 of 14 shots in just under 30 minutes of work on Saturday.

Sam-Jaxon Visscher has seen the most work, appearing in three preseason games for Humboldt. Visscher was acquired through a series of trades that originally sent former Broncos standout blueliner Greg Moro to Alberta.

In three appearances, Visscher has made 55 saves on 63 shots faced.

Visscher split time with Isaac Labelle on Friday night in a 6-5 loss to Melfort at the Elgar Petersen Arena.

As the Broncos settle on their opening day roster, they are also teasing a new look on the ice.

On Friday, the team announced that they will be unveiling new jerseys for the 2017-18 season. The jerseys are similar to the style worn during the 2007-08 season, when the Broncos won the RBC Cup.

Being the 10th anniversary since the win, the club elected to highlight the year in various ways.

A kickoff barbecue will be held from 5:00 to 7:00pm on Friday, September 15, where the jerseys will be shown for the first time.

The Broncos then host Notre Dame on Saturday for their first game of the regular season.
