Even though winter is looming Muenster's Brody Frerichs is still finding ways to stay on the baseball field.

The grade 12 student recently returned form the Baseball Canada Junior National Team Fall Instructional League camp in Orlando, Florida.

He spoke about the competition he saw during a few exhibition games against some major league baseball developmental squads.

"From seeing guys that throw 85 mph to guys that can get up to the high 90's it was definitely eye opening. It took quite a bit of adjusting to hit off those guys but it was a fun experience."

Just 30 players made the roster from across Canada, he was the only Saskatchewan born player to be named.

While in Orlando, Hurricane Matthew was blowing it's way through the southern state. Frerichs said they were forced to batten down the hatches and bunk up in their hotel. He mentioned that the first day was a tad unsettling after a trip to a nearby store.

"It was pretty picked over already from everybody else who wanted to get food so we didn't have a lot of food for that day so basically all we could do was lay in our rooms and watch Netflix because we had no TV signal or anything."

He did add that the storm never got as violent as expected in Orlando.

Shortly after his return to Canada, his regular team, the AAA Muenster Midget Red Sox were named the team of the year by Baseball Saskatchewan. An honour that has come to them before.

"That's the second time we were able to win that award and like I said, being from a town of 400 people winning that award twice as a team it tells you you are doing something right as a community."

Frerichs is now weighing options on where his promising career will take him for his upcoming post secondary education following next spring's graduation.
