After being out of action for over three months, missing 40 games, Humboldt's Erik Gardiner is back to playing hockey, following a scary injury.

In late October, Gardiner took a puck off the side of the helmet, snapping his visor, and leaving a mark on the side of his face.

Initially, it appeared as if the Kelowna Rockets forward would not have to miss any time. Later tests from doctors weren't as positive, forcing Gardiner to the stands.

Missing games has been a rarity for Gardiner, and naturally, being out for a large part of the season, was difficult.

"It was tough on me to miss that many games, but I did my best to stay positive on and off the ice. My teammates did a great job of getting us high in the standings, and it is really nice to be back and playing with them."

A lengthy comeback process began with rest, according to Gardiner. After that, he worked his way to skating without headaches and eventually being cleared for contact and game action.

He says that his family helped keep him up during his lengthy on-ice absence. Erik's older brother Reid, who currently plays in the ECHL, was a big help.

"He's been a huge support with the injury, and he's been up and down in the ranks, so we talk quite a bit and help each other out."

Erik and Reid played together at the end of last season after Reid was acquired by Kelowna from Prince Albert.

Gardiner made his return to the Kelowna line-up on February 9 and played in his fourth game back from injury on Wednesday.

"The first couple of games were rough, and I thought Wednesday night I played pretty well, and hopefully that game can kickstart my season again."

It's a work of good timing for Gardiner's return as well, getting the opportunity to sharpen his game prior to playoffs.

"That's the main focus right now, is getting in the playoffs, and hopefully I'll be able to play better in the playoffs and playing like I can."

The Rockets are currently tied for first in the BC Division and are third overall in the WHL's Western Conference.
