Humboldt Collegiate Institute celebrated their year of athletics Tuesday night.

This was the fourth year they have had the awards gala.

Last year, long time basketball coach Kevin Grieman was the guest speaker, this was the first year without him as he past away earlier this year.

Athletic Director Kerri Archibald wanted to make sure he was honoured during the evening.

"It was really important to us that Susan, Haley and Kaitlyn be here when we honour him. We're really fortunate that Kevin's scholarship is coming to our school, I know it was really important to him we are well funded and now he is making sure of it. I miss him everyday but I am really glad that his name is going to continue on through it."

Grieman's family has introduced the funding through Kevin which provides $500 to both the boys and girls basketball programs at the school.

28 awards were handed out across ten sports, also named were the 2015-16 junior and senior athletes of the year.

They were Jared Giddings(senior boys), Angela Baran(senior girls), Rylan Marianchuk(junior boys) and Jenna Giddings(junior girls).

In fact those four were all repeat winners as Archibald explains.

"As I was typing out the certificates I thought am I having deja vu, I was like no these four won athletes of the year last year. It just goes to show that their character along with their athletic prowess is really what puts them in that position. Now we have two graduating so next year we will have to have a couple new people but I'm really proud of the athletes we produce here at HCI."

It's no surprise that all the award winners excel in the classroom as well as in sports.

"It comes down a lot to their character and their determination which usually lends itself to being a good athlete," Archibald continued. "They are willing to put in the work, they usually come from great families that instill those values in them so a lot of it has to with the parents and us being lucky enough to coach great kids like that."

Humboldt Public School Principal Dave Hill was the guest speaker to close the event.

You can hear more from Archibald below in her interview with Bolt FM's Clark Stork.
