The HCI Mohawks boys volleyball team hosted their annual tournament November 3-4.

There were two teams from Humboldt, as well as teams from Dalmeny, Melfort, St. Brieux, Nipawin, Creighton, Middle Lake, Birch Hills and Annaheim competing.

The Mohawks stood above the rest of the competition, winning the tournament on Saturday night by defeating Annaheim in two sets. They knocked off Middle Lake in the semifinal.

Coach David Millette noted that having the tournament just ahead of playoffs was a chance to get one last run of game action in.

"We're hosting it right now as a good prep for playoffs. All teams will be competing in conference playoffs next weekend," he explained. "Our team, we will be going to Outlook to start our playoff run there. It's also important for us because we are hosting provincials."

Humboldt will be joined by the top nine teams in the province when they host the provincial championship November 24-25.

Millette says that they have known they would be hosts for quite some time now and are getting more and more excited as it approaches.

"We're definitely geared up for it and we know it will be a challenge, but the boys, the school, and the community is certainly excited for the opportunity to host the provincial tournament."

The home tournament win was the second of the season for the Mohawks, who also won a tournament in Nipawin earlier in the year. They finished second in Tisdale, and won the consolation side in Melfort, in addition to placing 7th out of 24 teams in Saskatoon.

Millette says the team has high hopes to be able to capture a provincial championship on their home court, and are looking forward to having plenty of fan support from the community.
