A new record has been obtained for Horizon Central basketball teams at Hoopla.

All six teams competing came home with medals from the provincial basketball tournament in Prince Albert with four teams winning gold - the most for both total and first place finishes in a single year for the region.

Repeating as champions in 1A boys were the Middle Lake Avengers, who defeated their rivals from Lake Lenore 75-53 in the championship game. Masson Altrogge led all scorers with 23 points, while Jamie Davis contributed a team high 17 points for the Lancers.

Middle Lake defeated Rocanville in last year's final, while the Lancers upgraded their 2017 bronze medal to silver status.

Playing in their sixth straight championship game, the Avengers girls team made it a double banner year for the school, knocking off their provincial rivals from Kenaston 60-43 behind a 23 point performance from Jenna Brockman.

It was the fifth time in six years that the Avengers and Kodiaks met for provincial gold, with Kenaston winning last year to even the series at 2-2.

In 2A girls, the Wynyard Bears captured their fourth straight provincial title, knocking off Asquith 72-37.

Anna Wolitski led the game in scoring with 26 points, helping to give the school their fifth overall championship in six years.

The St. Brieux Crusaders were represented by both boys and girls teams.

After nearly pulling the upset over Kenaston in the semifinal, the St. Brieux girls bounced back to win their first provincial basketball medal with a 55-42 win over Gladmar to claim the bronze medal. Paige Daubenfeld had 20 points for St. Brieux in the victory.

On the boys side, the Crusaders returned to the top of the 2A bracket for the third time in six years, defeating Caronport 100-84 behind Arjhay Aguilar's dominant 42 point performance.

The Crusaders missed the podium in 2017, falling to Osler in the third place game, but were quickly able to avenge that loss, defeating them in the semifinal this year.
