The provincial Scotties Tournament of Hearts is getting underway in Prince Albert Wednesday with one local woman vying for a trip to the national championship.

Kaitlyn Bowman is playing third with the Kelsey Dutton foursome from the Swift Current Curling Club.

The rink earned a berth in the field here in Humboldt at the recent Last Chance Spiel which was quite special to the Humboldt Collegiate Institute grad.

"It was pretty amazing to walk into my home club and almost go back out on the ice and have it feel the same as it did when I was in high school because that's five or six years ago now. Just to be able to have people around the rink that I knew and could talk to, it was a lot of fun."

Bowman and Dutton, the team's skip have have made the trip to the provincial Scotties on two occasions with other rinks, both as front end players. Now they are the leaders along with their lead and seconds, they are Chelsey Peterson and Ashley Resler.

Bowman says through their experience on the provincial stage, it simply still comes back to playing the game end by end.

"We just have to have fun and curl, that's all we are there to do. We are a young team, we're a developing team, we have no pressure on us that we have to let get into our heads or anything like that, it's just going out and playing the game we love."

Bowman began competitive curling at the age of 12 in junior playdowns, she continued to play through out high school but then got away from the game with college taking her to Calgary. She says she played a couple fun spiels and the competitive edge returned and that's when she began to talk to Dutton again.

"There was lots of shuffles and Kelsey and I ended up talking and finding a girl to play with us then another one. I knew her from before and we were friends so it seemed like a natural fit."

They will be one of four teams opening the draw on Wednesday afternoon at the Prince Albert Golf and Curling Club. They will take on Balgonie's Mandy Selzer at 2pm.

The final is slated for 5pm on Sunday.
