A softball player from Humboldt is headed to BC at the end of March to compete in a high performance tournament.

Brianne Welder made the North Saskatchewan roster, which will travel to White Rock, BC to take part in a tournament.

She says that her interest in the game has grown over the years, since first starting out.

"When I was four years old, my mom put me in T-ball and that's where it started. I liked it, so I kept playing and I even quit soccer to play softball, so it has been one of my favourite sports since I was little."

Welder says she tried out for the team as a pitcher, and tried the other positions as well to improve her chances of making the team.

Following two cutdowns, she cracked the roster and now will be off to BC on March 29.

"We are going to be on a bus for 20 hours, so it is a bit of a long ride," she said. "There is going to be 16 or more teams."

The tournament, hosted by the White Rock Renegades, runs from March 31 to April 2. A team from Southern Saskatchewan will also be competing at the tournament.

Welder, 14, has future aspirations to play ball in college and hopes to one day play for Team Canada.

She says that given the success of other area athletes, she thinks with a lot of work, it is attainable.

"It makes me feel like if they can do it, I can do it too. It makes me have high hopes for my future, because even making this high performance team now, I am going to continue to succeed."

Last season, Welder played for the Peewee Thunder in Humboldt, winning the North Central league championship with an unbeaten record.
