The hometown curling fans had lots to cheer about at the Humboldt Curling Club this weekend as Muenster product Bruce Korte claimed the Goldline Saskatchewan Players Championship.

Korte, along with rink of Kevin and Dan Marsh and Matt Lang fell in their first game of the weekend then rolled to six straight wins.

He said the ice was great and they caught onto it's tendencies that lasted all weekend long.

"Any time you start a bonspiel you are dealing with ice conditions and you have to understand what your parameters are for the ice. I thought Kevin Kalthoff did a great job of giving us the same ice surface every game, every draw. We caught onto it, we caught onto the tendencies and we threw really well."

They started the weekend with a 7-5 loss to Ray Sharp but that would be their only blemish. They rebounded with a 7-4 victory over Shane Vollman on Saturday morning, that was followed by a 7-3 triumph over Dean Kleiter. They then moved on to defeat Darren Camm 5-2. In the semi-finals they edged last year's Tankard finalist Jason Jacobson 5-4. The final was much more decisive, they routed Shaun Meachem 7-1 to take first place.

"It was definitely nice," he said about winning at the HCC. "You have so many people cheering for you and wanting to see you. It's a new team and they were all excited to see what we have in store and it was just pleasurable to be back home and be able to do that."

The win would have given them a birth in the provincial Tankard field but they had secured that earlier this year with a win in Moose Jaw. They will compete in another spiel in Phoenix before heading to Kindersley for the Tankard, Korte says every game is important to them as they continue to mesh leading up to the provincial championships.

"It's been a building process, we've played well at times. I thought this weekend we stepped it up a notch, we played probably where we want to be heading to provincials here. We were playing well as a team, all four were engaged and we were working real well together."

The Tankard begins February 3rd.
