Humboldt Broncos General Manager & Head Coach Darcy Haugan used another rookie filled line-up in the Battlefords Saturday night but it wasn't until two late penalties likely cost them another pre-season win.

The Stars were gifted nine power play opportunities and it wasn't until the 17:23 mark of the third during a five-on-three advantage that they would finally make the visitors pay.

Jake McMillan buried a back door pass tying the contest at 2-2 before Igor Leonenko snapped a wrist shot past Brett Friesen during overtime and another power-play to give the Stars the win.

The game didn't mean anything in the standings of course but it did mean something to the players still vying for a spot on the 2015-16 roster.

"They worked pretty hard and we killed a lot of them off," Assistant Coach Blair Wourms said on the post-game show of KMK Sales Broncos' Hockey. "I thought our goaltending was unbelievable tonight, Friesen was very good for us. It was exhibition but you know what? It matters to those guys in there and they're not going to take it lightly."

The Stars opened the scoring in the second period, Leonenko drove wide on a Bronco defender before finding Bryce Hall open in the slot, he wristed it past Friesen making it 1-0, 11:21 into the middle period.

The Broncos responded, Isaiah Letendre, a 1997 born forward finished off a nifty two-on-one rush with Rock Ruschowski tying the game with just under four minutes to go in the period. Trevor Posch took a hard hit along the boards to spring the two rookie hopefuls on the rush, then the second year winger from Leduc, Alberta jumped on a loose puck with five seconds left in the second slapping it past Ryan Rewerts giving the Broncos a 2-1 lead heading into the break.

At that point the Stars were 0/6 with the power play before taking advantage and overcoming the deficit.

Wourms was happy with the way they played as the competition for roster spots continues.

"There's going to be some tough decisions that have to be made. I think Sunday night as well you are going to see a different line-up and guys in and guys out and there's always guys playing for spots."

Friesen stopped 41/44 shots, he has played neck and neck with both Brett Clark and Josh Weber, the three have each played once in the last three games. It's not known now who will start or dress but that's what the exhibition season is for as Wourms continued.

"We have a tonne of 1997's and they've all done very well and it makes the decisions very hard to make. We've got another game to go here, that's what the exhibition season is for."

The Broncos were 0/4 on the power-play themselves, they forced Rewerts into only 21 saves.

They will conclude the pre-season Sunday at 6pm versus the Melfort Mustangs, a team they bounced 4-1 on Wednesday night in Melfort.
