It was a quick, yet very effective start to the Tankard in Estevan for Steve Laycock's rink.

The foursome, which features St. Gregor's Kirk and Dallan Muyres got out to a 6-1 lead through three ends against Aaron Shutra, ultimately needing just five ends to clinch an 8-3 win.

Dallan says that they were able to play their game.

"They came at us really aggressively and we did what we wanted to and capitalized on shots. The surface looks great, and everything is good. It's a textbook start."

Muyres says that part of the opening game process is to educate themselves on how things will play out on the ice surface.

"We learned the sheet, learned our rocks and how we're going to play this weekend. Whether that happened in 10 ends or five, that's the same."

He added that with three other sheets inside Estevan's Affinity Place, they wanted to check out the other action to see what they can expect.

"We're going to watch some other games and see how the other sheets are playing to grab all the information we can to be as good as we can be."

Team Laycock entered the Tankard as the top overall seed, and with the Brier in Regina this year, they will be looking to get back to the national championship to be the home team.

Wednesday's win moves them to the 'A' quarter-finals against Jason Jacobson at 9:00am on Thursday.
