It was the first ever Curling World Cup, and a St. Gregor local brought home the gold medal.

Kirk Muyres, along with his teammate Laura Walker, who is from Edmonton, were in Suzhou, China last week to take part as a mixed doubles team at the Curling World Cup. The Canadian pair went 5-1 throughout the round-robin to finish first place in their group. That result would put them up against the Americans in the finals.

Muyres and Walker would find themselves down 3-2 after 4 ends. However, backed by a 5th end where they scored 3,  the pair would roll on throughout the latter portion and go on to win 7-3 to capture the gold medal.

Muyers, who is from St. Gregor, spent most of his time honing his skills at the Humboldt Uniplex. He said, "I spent most of my days at the curling rink there, from about the age of 7 until I moved to the city at 18. Pretty much every day we were at the curling rink."

The pair had previously won the Canadian mixed doubles championships last April and was nominated by Curling Canada to take part in the World Cup. Muyres mentioned it was his first time in Asia for a curling tournament and said, "It was a heck of an experience." He also brought up the fact that the next Winter Olympics are in China in 2022 and commented on the experience the World Cup has given him. "I knew it was important for me to learn the jetlag, learn the culture, and those sort of things. So hopefully, if I do get a chance to go and compete in the Olympics for Canada, I have that experience behind me," said Muyres.

It was a clean sweep for the Canadians as the men's team led by Kevin Koe and the women's team lead by Rachel Homan also came home with the gold.
