The University of Saskatchewan Huskies men's hockey team is off to the national championship.

Over the weekend they downed the University of Alberta 4-0 and 3-2 to claim the Canada West title and punch their ticket to the University Cup.

Drake's Cam Blair is one of the locals on the club including Humboldt's David Stumborg, St. Brieux's Tyler Borstmeyer and Waldheim's Jesse Forsberg.

Blair said they weren't about to back down to the Bears, who are back to back national champions.

"We just stuck to our game plan and stayed mentally strong. There was a couple times this year we played the Bears and they got into our heads a bit and kind of got us on the penalty kill a little. This last weekend we all stayed mentally strong together and it all worked out in the end."

Also on the Huskies who will head to Halifax later this month is former Broncos Josh Roach and John Lawrence. Blair, who had a great career in Flin Flon before finishing in the Battlefords said they meshed well with their major junior teammates.

"I think some people have kind of counted out the junior "A" guys a bit but I mean with the amount of junior "A" guys we have on our team combined with all the other guys I think we came together quite well. It's probably the most tight knit team I've ever played on, it's pretty special to do with that group of guys."

The national tournament will be played from March 17th to 20th. The Huskies will fly out on the 14th of the month.

The Huskies themselves came up short a couple seasons ago when they hosted the event, Blair says bringing the second Canadian banner back to the Rutherford Arena would be something remarkable to be a part of.

"Oh yeah, absolutely. the Huskies have only won national championship in their long history and to be able to get that second one would be pretty special."
