The Bruno Merchants are the Saskatchewan Softball Association "C" provincial champions.

Over the weekend in Prince Albert they finished a perfect 6-0 en route to the title.

Spokesman Matt Hillier said they were limping into the tournament but everything turned around.

"No, we were kind of struggling, we had lost probably nine league games in a row. It was tough go there for a while, we won our second last league game before we entered provincials so it was kind of good to get a win in before we came to provincials so that was nice."

They downed the Prince Albert Blue Jays 6-0 in game one, Justin Dauvin was the winning pitcher, Josh Dueck supplied the power with two home runs. In their second game they beat the Saskatoon Padres, Dauvin was the winning pitcher in that contest as well. James Anderson was credited with the victory in their 13-9 win over Regina Silver Screen with Hillier hitting a solo home run. That landed them in the quarter-final versus Conquest which they took 10-6. In the semi-final they outscored the PA Pirates 13-6. Dueck, Dauvin and Earl Ghostkeeper had round trippers.

In the final they again dumped Silver Screen, this time 12-8. Dauvin was again the winning pitcher with a home run, Lee Huber also hit a homer.

Without having playoffs this season due to scheduling conflicts through out the Saskatoon Softball League with other teams going to provincial events and tournaments south of the border Hillier said it was nice to end on a high note.

"Oh it was very important, it's always nice winning, winning never gets old. It doesn't matter what caliber or what it is, winning always feels good."

Routinely the Merchants enter the "B" category in the Saskatchewan play downs but that option was not open this year. Hillier admits the competition was downgraded but somebody still had to win so why not Bruno.

"The caliber is a little bit different from league compared to provincial "C". The pitching is not as strong and the hitting is a little bit scrappier."

Overall they outscored their opponents 64-32 in the six match-ups.

The Merchants season is now complete but Hillier says they will have a busy winter recruiting and hopefully a "B" division is rekindled next July.
