The Middle Lake Avengers are once again provincial basketball champions.

However, for the first time, it is the boys team that claimed the gold medal at Hoopla.

The Avengers downed Rocanville 100-62 in the championship game to earn the title in just their second ever appearance in the provincial final.

Following their win, the Avengers girls team looked to capture their fourth straight provincial title, taking on Kenaston.

A close back and forth battle that saw Middle Lake with a slight halftime edge ultimately went the way of Kenaston, who took a 53-47 decision.

The matchup between Middle Lake and Kenaston has become commonplace in 1A girls play. It was the fourth time in five years that the two schools met in the final.

Their record is now even at two wins each, with Kenaston also winning in 2013. The Avengers took the championship in 2014 and 2015, defeating Fillmore in 2016.

Another Horizon Central team familiar with winning is the Wynyard Bears girls team.

They captured their third straight championship and fourth in five years with a 87-41 win over Kinistino. It was the fifth straight provincial final for the Bears, whose only loss in that time came against Foam Lake in 2014.

The Bears have won 11 medals since 1998, including six gold.

Two more teams from the region picked up bronze medals in Regina.

The Lake Lenore boys defeated Buffalo Narrows 88-56 to claim third place in 1A play. It was their first medal since back-to-back second place finishes in 2010 and 2011.

In 2A girls play, Foam Lake earned the bronze, knocking off Shaunavon 63-39, to give the Panthers a third medal in four years.

Taking fourth place finishes at Hoopla were the St. Brieux boys, who narrowly fell to Valley Christian Academy 90-87.

The Lake Lenore girls dropped a close game in their final game as well, falling 61-53 to Asquith.
