Although they are automatic qualifiers as the hosts, the HCI Mohawks boys volleyball team ensured they won their way to the provincial championship.

The Mohawks hosted one of three regional tournaments to narrow the field down ahead of provincials on November 24 and 25.

Humboldt started out the day with a three set win over Unity before claiming first place in the pool with a two set win over Biggar.

In the semifinal, the Mohawks downed Saskatoon Christian in two sets before taking on La Loche for the regional championship.

The back and forth final game saw HCI claim the regional championship in three sets.

The win sees momentum continue to build for the Mohawks ahead of provincials, where the boys team has only a bronze medal from 1996 in their history.

Humboldt is pooled with Shaunavon, Moose Jaw Vanier, Sturgis and Saskatoon Christian. The other side sees Biggar, Melville, Tisdale, La Loche and Melfort.

Games begin at 12:00pm on Friday and will be split between Humboldt Public School and HCI.

Avengers secure second straight provincial berth

After a drought of over 10 years from provincials ended in 2016, the Middle Lake Avengers boys volleyball team secured their second straight trip.

Middle Lake was home to the east regional in 1A boys play on Saturday.

The home team carved their path to the provincial championship by not losing a set in their four games.

In the round robin the Avengers defeated Englefeld and Cowessess.

The semifinal saw a two set win over Annaheim, with the regional championship being won in two sets over Bellevue/Wakaw.

At provincials, the Avengers will see Mossbank, Medstead, Rouleau and Annaheim in the round robin. Edam, Bellevue, Leader, Vanguard and Goodsoil round out the 10 team tournament.

The Avengers reached the quarterfinal last year.
