The HCI Mohawks got three touchdowns from running back Dawson Hering and had an all-around strong showing to earn their first win of the season.

The Mohawks hit the highway to La Ronge to meet the Churchill Chargers, who are in their first year in 9-man football.

The Chargers were working on two wins in the early season, while the Mohawks were still looking for their first after setbacks to Nipawin and Melfort.

Late in a scoreless first quarter, defensive back Cole Grace intercepted a pass to eventually set-up a 10 yard touchdown run from Hering to make it 7-0 Mohawks early in the second frame.

Five minutes later, Hering would find the endzone again on a three yard run, following a 28 yard carry from Riley Amendt.

La Ronge hit the scoreboard late in the first half, to make it 14-7 through two quarters.

The third quarter saw HCI widen their lead to 20-7, with Rylan Eckl capping off a touchdown drive after a 25 yard pass from quarterback Carter Tarnowski to Hering.

A strong defensive game for the Mohawks continued in the fourth quarter, with Okechukwu Okeay knocking the ball loose. Amendt would recover, giving Humboldt the ball at La Ronge's 27 yard line.

On the next play, Hering would make his third house call of the game, taking the ball in from 27 yards to make it 27-7.

The Chargers added a late touchdown to make the final 27-14 for the Mohawks.

HCI will look to keep momentum from the win going when they return to Glenn Hall Park to meet Tisdale on Friday.
