The Melfort Mustangs scored four goals in the third period, as they doubled up the Humboldt Broncos 6-3 to wrap up the preseason on Saturday night.

For the third straight game, the Broncos found the scoresheet first, when Zane Avery collected his own rebound and beat Melfort goalie Evan Plotnik on a high shot.

At the 14:02 mark, a bouncing puck went off a pair of players and over the glove of Broncos starter Jacob Wassermann to even the game at 1-1.

Andrew Thompson was credited with his first of three goals on the night for the Mustangs.

Although it was only exhibition play, the Humboldt-Melfort rivalry showed its typical antics, as Broncos defenseman Austin Anselmo and Mustangs forward Reed Gunville dropped the gloves late in the 1st period.

Anselmo took a cross-check to the head from Gunville to start the war of words before the two players started throwing fists.

The Broncos regained the lead early in the second on the man advantage, as Conner Lukan deposited his first of two goals in the period.

Mustangs forward Justin Ball tied the game at 14:31 of the middle frame, scoring his third goal in two nights for Melfort. Lukan's second tally would come just 1:41 later on a pretty pass from Logan Schatz.

All the scoring in the third period was done by the Mustangs, beginning with Melfort born forward Jake Misskey, who stayed with the play, collecting his own rebound on originally a highlight save from Sam-Jaxon Visscher.

Thompson would score the next two goals for Melfort, beating Visscher over the blocker on a slick wrist hand shot. He then tipped home a redirected puck to make it 5-3 for the Mustangs.

After being tripped on a mini breakaway, Schatz had a chance to cut the lead in half on a penalty shot, but Plotnik followed him to the backhand to keep it a two goal lead for Melfort.

An empty net goal was tacked on in the final seconds for the Mustangs.

Fresh from training camp with the Western Hockey League's Vancouver Giants, Wassermann stopped 13 of 14 shots for the Broncos.

Visscher took over midway through the second, making 21 saves on 25 shots faced.

The Broncos begin the regular season at home on Saturday, as they welcome the Notre Dame Hounds for a 7:30pm faceoff.
