Yes, the Melfort Mustangs tore a strip off the Broncos Saturday night but at the end of the day, the green and gold picked up a weekend split with the reigning champs to close the 2015 portion of their season and that is something to build on heading into the final 22 games of the season starting in January.

The Broncos 4-2 win Friday was followed by a 7-0 rout at the Northern Lights Palace as both teams began their break after the game.

Early on it actually looked like the Broncos were continuing to control the play with some early chances but Evan Plotnik made some key stops in the opening minutes before allowing his team to jump ahead, 1-0 after one just like Friday. Craig Leverton fired a seeing eye wrist-shot past Austin Swystun who was making his second straight start of the weekend.

The 1-0 second period Mustang lead was the only similarity, Tristan Frei would make sure the Broncos weren't upsetting the champs in their own rink. The Melfort captain scored early in the middle period and then short-handed late to make it 3-0 and pretty much seal the deal.

"We're down 2-0, we get a power-play we don't capitalize on, all of a sudden they get a short-handed goal, it's 3-0, that changes the game a lot," explained Assistant Coach Blair Wourms on the post-game show of KMK Sales Broncos' hockey.

Even down by three going to the third Humboldt was generating chances and forcing Plotnik to mix in a number of tough saves to go with a pair of goal posts. The Broncos then produced a two man advantage but they couldn't muster much on goal.

"We have a five-on-three for a minute and a half, it could have been 3-2 but we come up empty there," Wourms added of their downfall.

A pair of bad bounces made it 5-0 before Frei completed the hat trick and Ashton Clark tucked a power-play rebound past Swystun capping the scoring.

Swystun stopped 23/30 shots to fall to 1-1.

The special teams edge also went to the Mustangs, they were 2/5, the Broncos went 0/3 including the extended five-on-three.

The Broncos will now disperse home before returning and preparing for the Notre Dame Hounds on January 6th.
