It took a couple of bonspiels but the Steve Laycock rink with St. Gregor's Kirk and Dallan Muyres has their first win of the curling season.

They won the Direct Horizontal Drilling Classic in Edmonton last weekend going 6-0 including a finals win over Reid Carruthers.

Kirk told us this week that they knew their start would be slow.

"We did some things this off season that were totally different. We were good enough to be at the top of the game but we weren't good enough to be the best in the game so we knew we had to change something. We did some small things different this off season so we knew there was going to be learning curve and adjustment period going into the season and we didn't know how long that was going to be. It was really a matter of being patient in those first couple events."

They won only two of their first nine games at two events, since then the Saskatoon based foursome is 11-1. They have a third place finish from two weeks ago to go with the first place prize in Edmonton.

Muyres added that it's nice to get the win in early so it doesn't start weighing on the rink.

"I'm excited that we got that first win under our belt because it makes sure we qualify for the last slam of the year too where you need to win an event similar to the Champions Cup in golf. A little weight off our shoulders and now we just keep on grinding as we go to Portage this weekend."

They are the reigning champions of the Canad Inns Men's Classic and they already have a good start beating Jordan Smith 6-1 in just six ends Friday morning. They will face Rasmus Stjerne at 4 o'clock Friday afternoon.

The three time Saskatchewan champions are hoping for another run at the Brier but in the back of their minds is also the Olympic trials for the 2018 Games.

"Olympics are the pinnacle of sport and once you are an Olympian and once you're an Olympic gold medalist there is just nothing like that," Muyres envisioned. "I think that is definitely the biggest goal of ours but at the same time the Brier is a close second or all the same."

This year's provincial playdowns are set for Tisdale on the weekend of February 1st-5th.
