The quest to represent the Province of Saskatchewan on the national stage of men's curling begins Wednesday afternoon in Tisdale.

Among the field of 16 teams is the three time reigning champions, Steve Laycock from Saskatoon.

St. Gregor's Dallan Muyres fires lead stones for the top ranked team that is extremely busy on the Grand Slam Tour. He says despite their hectic schedule of big money events coming home and playing for a chance to earn the green jackets is always special.

"Your season is judged a lot of time on your provincial or national success so if anything it's easier for me to get really get focused and narrow it in at provincials," he said just prior to hitting the highway to Tisdale. "Playing at home, playing for a birth at the Brier, those things get the competitive juices flowing."

Kirk Muyres is the Laycock third, also in the field is Muenster's Bruce Korte who is rejuvenated with a young team, they come in ranked second, Humboldt product Dustin Kalthoff chucks third rocks for Jason Jacobson's rink, they come in as the fifth seed. They earned their place in the field with a solid showing at a Humboldt event on the Saskatchewan Tour earlier this season.

Muyres said he wouldn't be shocked if they are all around come the weekend.

"It certainly wouldn't be surprising to see any of those guys, they are in the building phase where they are going to be there and they are playing really well. They are playing on World Tour events, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see them come playoff time."

As for the Laycock lead, he is seeking his fifth Brier appearance, one more than brother Kirk. He admits getting over the hurdle on the national stage is the end goal.

"Getting there is not enough for me at this point, I need to win that. I think everyone on the team has that same real drive or that real push to win so this is a stepping stone. Ultimately winning that Brier, that's what's it's all about."

The games get underway at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon, Laycock meets Lashburn's Ryan Armstrong. Kalthoff and Jacobson open against Fox Valley's Ryan Deis and Korte waits until draw 2 where they face Dale Craig.

Sunday's final is slated for 2:30.
