The Humboldt Broncos management team had a plan going into their third draft which took place Friday in Nipawin.

They knew they wanted to become harder to play against, more offensive plus get deeper on the blueline. Associate General Manager Brayden Klimosko feels they accomplished all the above.

"Knowing that we didn't have a third round pick we probably wanted a forward and a defenceman, one of each in the first two rounds and we were able to do that. Overall we're very happy.

Their first selection, with the eighth choice they took Saskatoon Generals sniper Josh Paulhus. He produced 35 goals and 25 assists in 29 games last season in bantam. His mother is a former Humboldtian as well.

"He has a lot of sand paper to his game," Klimosko said of Paulhus. "I know some of our scouts really like those types of guys, he was high on our list. He was number one to be honest, if we had first pick overall that was the guy we were taking."

He is a 10th round pick of the Western Hockey League's Seattle Thunderbirds.

With their second selection they chose Saskatoon Outlaws rearguard Graham Skinner. The fifth round WHL pick had 15 points in 29 games this past season.

"You try to get guys in those first couple rounds that can play at 17 and I think we've done that here again this year," Klimosko explained. "I think he's a guy that can score some goals on the point as well as be a good all around defender for us."

The Broncos didn't have a third round pick, that was traded to the Battlefords in the Brett Horn transaction.

With their fourth draft pick they stayed on the blueline and went with Moose Jaw's Chase Lacombe. He had 13 points in 29 games.

"We're trying to take the best player possible and if you get him there, if you have Skinner and Lacombe maybe on the back end you're looking pretty good for the future. We're overall very happy with those first two defencemen we were able to take," Klimosko explained. Lacombe is also a fifth round WHL pick.

They went back up front with their final two selections going with Swift Current's Riley Dekowney and James Form out of the Saskatoon Outlaws program.

Dekowney wasn't taken in the WHL draft despite his 31 goals in 30 games, he added 25 helpers.

"If he can't necessarily put a bunch of pucks in the net he's going to be able to grind it out in the corners for us," said Klimosko. "He's kind of like Paulhus, I think that was our plan this year was to get some guys that can muck and grind as well as put the puck in the net."

Landing Form may be a long shot but with their last chance pick, Klimosko said why not?

"Obviously his aspirations are the WHL and you definitely don't blame him but if you can get him back here at 16 or 17 he could be a big difference maker. I think that's the goal looking into it is taking a guy even in the sixth round he could be one of the best players in this league."

Form scored 29 times in 30 games plus set up 27 more. He's a third round pick of the Kootenay Ice.

League meetings are finishing this weekend in Niapwin.
