The Humboldt Broncos will definitely head into the post season on a high note.

The green and gold won in overtime for the second straight game at home to close the regular season with 31 victories, 14 more than a year ago.

Coming into the 58th game of the campaign that was postponed a day due to a March blizzard, the Broncos didn't need to win, their fifth overall fate was secure, the Mustangs needed to collect at least a point to hold off the Melville Millionaires for the final spot in the bracket.

The two time reigning champions did that in a 5-4 overtime loss but it was a 17 year-old rookie leaving his mark in his Broncos'' debut.

Quinton Ong, fresh off his final year with the AAA Midget Saskatoon Contacts scored at 1:13 of extra time giving Humboldt their 64th point on the year.

Ong also scored at the 8:37 point of the second opening the scoring for the Broncos who trailed 2-0 after the first frame. He admitted he never thought his Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League debut would be this exhilarating.

"No, I was happy to get in the line up and obviously contributing two goals is really exciting."

After Dakota Boutin and Carson Albrecht scored in the first, Ong made it 2-1. Reed Gunville answered for Melfort though before the second was complete restoring the two goal cushion.

Brayden Camrud fired his fifth of the year past Evan Plotnik drawing Humboldt back within one early in the third but again the Mustangs would pull away, Justin Ball scored a short handed marker at 13:38 of the third period, Albrecht's also came while Melfort was down a man.

The Broncos continued to press and they were reported by a couple of unlikely sources, Trent Huitema wristed his first career SJHL goal past Plotnik and just 22 seconds later Logan Boulet found a rebound in the high slot snapping his third of the year to knot the game at 4-4.

In overtime, on Ong's first shift he picked up a lose puck at the Bronco blueline and sped away before beating Plotnik over his glove hand.

"It was a dream debut, I couldn't even have dreamed it any better, " he continued.

Assistant Coach Brayden Klimosko was also very impressed with his play.

"It was a very good debut, two big goals for us, he definitely didn't look out of place. He's known to score some goals his whole and then here at the junior "A" level you can see he can do it here to so good for him, he deserves it."

A few other 1999 born players contributed, Tian Rask added a pair of assists, as did Xavier Labelle. Evan Thomas, another affiliated player from the Moose Jaw Generals looked solid in his first SJHL contest.

Tristan Elder added a pair of helpers, Cole Young and Dawson Atamanchuk picked up singles.

Carter Seminuk made 24 stops in his first start since February 3rd. Plotnik turned aside 32 Humboldt shots.

Humboldt was 1/7 on the man advantage, the Mustangs were 1/6 but they did get two while short handed.

There was two other games, Flin Flon blanked the Nipawin Hawks 4-0 to win the Sher-Wood Division, that set the Broncos up to play the Hawks in the 4 vs. 5 first round series, that will likely start March 17th in Nipawin.

The Millionaires dropped a 4-2 decision to Estevan, the Mils miss the playoffs again. The Bruins meet the Yorkton Terriers in the 3 vs. 6 series.

The survivor series will feature Kindersley against Weyburn and Melfort traveling to Notre Dame. The Klippers and Wings play Thursday, the Mustangs and Hounds probably Friday in Wilcox.
