The Humboldt Broncos have reached into Edmonton to improve their depth at centre ice.

1998 born Derek Patter was acquired from the LaRonge Ice Wolves for a draft pick on Monday.

Now entering his second Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League campaign, he is looking forward to the fresh start.

"I was excited," he said upon hearing about the deal. "It was awesome, me and my family were really excited to get the news, we're really happy to join a great organization like the Broncos."

Patter put up solid numbers in his rookie season with the Wolves, he scored 13 times and added 10 assists in 54 games. His two-way game also led him to 67 penalty minutes.

He also brings a winning pedigree to the locker room with a  number of Alberta provincial championships under his belt including a AAA bantam title with the SSAC Lions.

"I was pretty fortunate to play for some really strong teams growing up, I won a couple provincial championships. Obviously the team in bantam was pretty awesome, you don't get to play for a team like that good every year but it was good. I developed as a player and a person and hopefully I can continue that in Humboldt."

The club also announced Monday that they have traded 20 year-old forward Dawson Atamanchuk to the Weyburn Red Wings for future considerations. You will hear from the hometown product Wednesday.

You can hear more from Patter below as he spoke with Bolt FM's Clark Stork Monday evening.
