Saskatchewan will have a chance to defend their crown at the Canadian Baseball Championships.

Despite dropping their final two games of the round robin, Saskatchewan has finished second in Pool A at the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg.

The second place standing gives them a bye to the semi-final round, as they await the winner of Thursday's quarterfinal game between Ontario and British Columbia.

Five Midget AAA Muenster Red Sox - Logan Hofmann, Brody Frerichs, Tyler McWillie, Jayden Huls and Rylan Marianchuk - are competing at the games for the province.

Last year, Team Sask won the Baseball Canada Cup in Alberta. This year, the tournament is part of the Summer Games.

Frerichs and McWillie have each started a game for Saskatchewan, while Hofmann has had two appearances as a relief pitcher, earning one win and one save.

McWillie leads the team in runs batted in through the round robin, while Frerichs is tied for the team lead in hits.

Saskatchewan's semifinal game will take place on Thursday at 6:00pm. A win sends them to Friday's Gold Medal Game, also at 6:00pm.

The Bronze Medal Game is slated for Friday afternoon at 3:00.

In athletics, Elstow's Payne Wylie continued to show his outstanding ability on the track.

Wylie qualified first overall in Tuesday's 400 metre run, and will take part in the final on Thursday. He then finished in third in 110 metre hurdles on Wednesday and will run that final on Friday.

Alyson Edwards of Strasbourg took part in the women's high jump on Tuesday, finishing in 13th spot with a best jump of 1.55 metres.

Off for the day was Molly Yungmann of St. Gregor, who will run the 400 metre hurdles 'B' final on Thursday, in addition to participating in the first four events of heptathlon.

The final three events will be on Friday.

Beginning Monday, August 7, Travis Walls of Wakaw and Team Saskatchewan will take to the volleyball court for the first of five round robin games.
