Skate Humboldt is set to welcome the province Friday as the Regional Invitational Figure Skating Competition gets underway at the Elgar Petersen Arena.

President of Skate Humboldt, Troy Luchyshyn says there will be numerous clubs competing in the two-day competition that begins Friday at 4:30pm and continues all day Saturday from 9:00am to 9:00pm.

"The regional invitational competition is where we have 15 skating clubs from around the province and senior figure skaters from those clubs compete in a number of events."

He added that Skate Humboldt is expected to have 15 skaters in the field, with many more ready to compete.

"We are anticipating between 100 and 120 skaters through the two-day event."

Skaters will compete in jumps, spins and team events, as well as the free skate, interpretive and creative improv.

The figure skating competition marks the beginning of a busy weekend for Skate Humboldt, as they host a FunFest from 10:45am to 4:00pm Sunday.

"This event is targeted for younger skaters who are just learning to skate, whether it is for hockey, ringette, figure skating, speed skating, or just as a life skill," Luchyshyn noted. "They get to show off their agility, balance and control skating skills that they have learned in their programs."

There is no charge to attend either event.
