For Humboldt and area participants in the Special Olympics Winter Games, the weekend of February 8th to the 10th was a special one with equally special results.

Special Olympics participants headed to Regina for the Winter Games with their eyes on medalling in bowling and floor hockey. Other sports included snowshoeing, skiing, and athletic competitions.

Shelley Finney, coach, and longtime Special Olympics supporter were on hand to witness a silver medal for the group in bowling.

The event was capped with a miraculous last-second goal in floor hockey captured on video. Coach Brian Reifferscheid recounts the last minute heroics that led up to the victory. The Humboldt Group faced the Southwest, a combined team from Moose Jaw and Swift Current. With two minutes left in the game, Humboldt found themselves down 5-4. Coach Reifferscheid and his co-coach Lawrence Weber called a time out to regroup. With a minute left in the game, Humboldt pulled the goalie in favour of an extra attacker.

The tying goal was scored with forty-four seconds on the clock. With that, Humboldt returned to its five-man complement and netted the winning goal with a single second left in the game.

Reifferscheid was approached by Weber about twelve years ago to lend his coaching experience and his love of being involved with youth. He is grateful for the experience and proud of the efforts of all the participants in Special Olympics, both this past weekend and over the years.
