A star-studded class of local athletes will be forever enshrined into the Humboldt and District Sports Hall of Fame in June.

The committee announced Wednesday that National Hockey League player and current Tampa Bay Lightning assistant coach Brad Lauer, another former NHLer, Carmel's Jarome Engele, Canadian Football League all-star linemen and Grey Cup champion, Kelly Bates and longtime figure skater Wendy Toye will all be inducted in June.

Also being enshrined will be the 2007-08 Humboldt Broncos who claimed the national junior "A" championship that season with a 1-0 over the Camrose Kodiaks.

Their netminder, Taylor Nelson says his time with that club is something he will never forget.

"Getting a chance with Dean Brockman to come play for the Broncos was extremely exciting and a great opportunity for myself. I couldn't have asked anything more of my experience in Humboldt, I absolutely love the community."

Despite having a team laden with local talent and built with some high end recruits it was Nelson's save on Joe Colbourne in the dying seconds of the RBC Cup final that is vivid in the mind of Humboldt hockey fans even if it's not burned in his mind.

"To be honest I can't even describe it, I can describe my feelings afterwards that's for sure," he laughed from his home in Nebraska where he works as an assistant coach for the Tri-City Storm of the United States Hockey League. "At the time when someone tells you they blacked out, that's honestly what happened."

The work began long before the save however, Nelson pointed to their devastating quadruple overtime loss to the Selkirk Steelers in the Anavet Cup the year prior as a big key to their success.

"It was talks of RBC Cup or bust almost. We wanted to do it, we got a taste of what victory is and what it takes to get beyond that Anavert Cup and get to the Royal Bank Cup, we weren't going to be denied."

Nelson was named player of the game in the national championship. His three years landed him a scholarship at Ferris State University. After four years with the Bulldogs he played some minor pro, he has since landed with the Storm helping them win the USHL championship last season.

Ticket details for June 24th's event will be released soon.

We will have reaction from all the nominees in the coming days.
