The season has come to an end for the senior and junior Bruno Axemen broomball clubs.

Both the young Axemen and the seniors competed in the national championships this month in Ontario and despite not the top results the experience continues to be fruitful for the small Saskatchewan hot bed for the sport.

Coach Ray Bender said the larger market teams of the east were just too much for the senior squad.

"It's always tough with Ontario and Quebec who have been strong beds in broomball for years and they just have the numbers. It makes a big difference when can pick from a lot more players than just what we usually take where they make an all-star team."

Bender isn't upset by the outcomes, in fact he is completely opposite, he admits that facing that competition will only make you and your team better in the long run.

"People love the game and they want to go and they want to compete against I'd say against the best in world. I think Canada produces the best broomball players in the world and people just want to compete and see how they do. Win or lose it's just a great experience."

The senior Axemen finished 2-4 with the "B" side silver medal, They also had strong tournaments from forward Jeff Bassett and defenceman Nathan Salmon who received second team all-star nods. Adam Olchowski was named team most valuable player.

The juniors finished with a record of 1-6, they did bring home the "B" side bronze medal.

Bender said that was very promising considering their young group.

"Three-quarters of our team are still high school kids and just don't have the strength and ability as far as the older stronger players. A prime example is getting the ball out along the boards, it's just tough when you are up against a guy that's 50 pounds heavier and three years older so we had a very young club. We only lose one player so I think there is some promising things in the future for us."

Morley Sowa(pictured below) was named their team MVP plus he was named the goaltender for the 1st all-star team. He isn't even a goalie, he was forced into the position due to an injury to their regular ball stopper.

Bender says their season is now over but he says they will be back next year trying to get back to the top of Canada's broomball mountain.
