The HCI Mohawks opened up their season in a big way, routing the Tisdale Tornados 59-15. The Mohawks found their way through some early struggles to take a 18-9 lead at the break.

It was the second half that was the difference maker for Humboldt, as they put up six touchdowns to secure the win.

Landon Seipp, who had an interception returned for a touchdown and a blocked kick, says it was nice to get back to football.

"It felt great to get back on the field and get used to hitting guys again. Our team worked really well together."

Seipp added that the win gives their team a jolt moving forward.

"The win gives us confidence down the road and in the future too, it gives our younger guys an opportunity to play."

Running back Tyson Hergott opened the scoring in the first quarter for his first of two touchdowns on the day.

Slotback Jayden Huls also had a pair of majors, with Zidan Buslig, Max Dale and Hayden Reeme finding the endzone.

The Mohawks play their first home game of the season on Friday against Clavet.

The Cougars are looking for their first win of the season, after they fell 26-7 to Melfort in the conference's other game last week.


In six man football, the Raymore Rebels improved to 2-0 on the season after they defeated Ituna 34-17.

The Watrous Wildcats opened up their season at home, downing Preeceville 38-13. Other scores saw Wynyard defeat Watson 69-6, Viscount fell in a tight battle, 48-45 to Porcupine Plain and Lanigan went down 44-6 to Hudson Bay.

Scheduled games this week will see Lanigan visit Aberdeen on Thursday. Also playing on Thursday is the Wakaw Warriors who play their first game of the season when they visit the Shellbrook Aardvarks.

Friday action has Raymore visiting Cupar, Viscount is home to Carrot River, Wynyard visits Watrous and Watson heads to Preeceville.


It was a battle of prairie rivals in Saskatoon on Saturday night as the Hilltops hosted the Regina Thunder.

Saskatoon got off to a slow start, trailing 8-0 after the first quarter, but took control ahead of the half on their way to a 20-18 win.

Humboldt's Drayke Unger, a fifth year offensive lineman for the Toppers, got the call on a goal to go situation to score a one yard touchdown.

Saskatoon has two more former HCI Mohawks who are starters. Defensive tackles Dillon Buckle and Tristan Hering helped keep the Thunder running game in check for just 61 yards.

Buckle had a pair of tackles, while Hering had one tackle and a forced fumble.

Another Mohawk, special teams monster, Connor Guillet had four tackles. Rookie Jared Giddings is a backup safety for the team as well.

The Hilltops are off to Kelowna, BC this week for an inter-conference matchup against the Okanagan Sun.


The U of S Huskies are 2-0 on their young season after a 29-17 win over the Alberta Golden Bears.

Saskatchewan had a 17-3 lead at the break before pacing their way to victory.

Wynyard's Lance Bashutsky, a defensive back, had five tackles for the Dogs, while also chipping in with one kick return for 29 yards.

Former Mohawk and Hilltop Tyrell Hering is in his first year with the Bears after four seasons in Saskatoon.


Humboldt's Kelly Bates and the Simon Fraser Clan are off to a slower start to 2016.

Taking on Texas A&M Kingsville, the Clan were unable to find much of anything in a 68-7 setback.

Their focus now turns to conference play, as they open up their home schedule by welcoming the Humboldt State Lumberjacks.
