The HCI Mohawks opened up their camp on August 23rd and they have spent the past couple of weeks preparing for their first game of the season.

That game comes on Friday afternoon when they visit the Tisdale Tornados.

The Tornados are looking to carry on some early season momentum after they defeated Nipawin 42-0 last week.

After this, the Mohawks remain at home for the next three weeks with games against Clavet, Nipawin and Melfort. They close out the season at Clavet and at Melfort, with a bye before playoffs.

Elsewhere in the conference this week, Melfort visits Clavet.


In six man football, the season got underway a week ago, as the defending 1A provincial champion Raymore Rebels opened up their title defense with a massive 61-14 win over Milestone.

They will look to go 2-0 on the year when they visit Ituna on Friday.

Other action on Friday has the Viscount Vikings visiting Porcupine Plain, Watrous welcomes Preeceville and Wynyard is at Watson. On Thursday, the Lanigan Lazers open their season by hosting Hudson Bay.

The Wakaw Warriors have the week off and begin their season next week at Shellbrook.


Well underway is the Canadian Junior Football League season.

The Saskatoon Hilltops, who have five former HCI Mohawks are 3-1 on the season thus far. In their fifth and final year is offensive lineman Drayke Unger and defensive tackle Dillon Buckle.

Buckle has 9 tackles on the season, but his highlight may have come offensively in the team's opening game, catching a four yard touchdown pass.

Third-year defensive end Connor Guillet is a top special teams player for the Hilltops and leads the team in tackles with eight.

Tristan Hering is in his second-year as a defensive lineman and has three tackles, a sack and blocked kick.

Rookie Jared Giddings has seen some time as well, recording two tackles and a pass deflection.

The Hilltops host Regina on Saturday in a battle of 3-1 teams.


Week 1 of the CIS season got underway last week, and it featured a provincial battle between the U of S Huskies and Regina Rams. A back and forth contest, the Huskies took the game in double overtime, 41-39.

Wynyard's Lance Bashutsky is the Huskies primary returner, and he had 3 kick returns for 108 yards, including a long of 76. He also had 1 punt return for 22 yards.

Liam Jensen from Watrous is in his second year with the Rams after redshirting one year ago, he is a backup on the offensive line. The redshirt season means he still has a full five years of eligibility.

After having his junior eligibility used up, former HCI Mohawk and Saskatoon Hilltop Tyrell Hering is now in Edmonton with the University of Alberta Golden Bears.

The Bears fell 39-24 to the defending Vanier Cup champion UBC Thunderbirds.


Humboldt's Kelly Bates is now in his second season as Head Coach of the NCAA's Simon Fraser Clan.

Looking to improve on what has been a tough few years for Simon Fraser, the Clan got their season underway last Saturday.

They lost 47-3 to the Idaho State Bengals. Up next is a meeting with Texas A&M Kingsville this Saturday.

GNAC play for the Clan begins on the 17th when they welcome Humboldt State.
