The HCI Mohawks secured first place in their conference, guaranteeing homefield advantage for atleast a pair of playoff games in the process, as they defeated the Melfort Comets 45-12.

A scoreless opening quarter saw the Mohawks take a 17-6 lead into the break after touchdowns from Genesis Legaspi and Jared Giddings. Cole Grace also kicked through a field goal. Melfort trailed 17-0 before finding the endzone late in the half after their own blocked punt was picked up and ran for a first down. Later in the drive, the Comets faked a punt for a first down.

In the third quarter, Tanner Gerwing returned a punt inside the Melfort 10 yard line. Two plays later, Jacob Zimroz found the endzone giving Humboldt a 24-6 lead through three.

The Mohawks poured it on in the final quarter with Giddings making it 31-12. Legaspi caught a slant pass over the middle from quarterback Landon Seipp who tossed his third touchdown of the game with 7:45 remaining. Legaspi would then intercept a pass from Melfort QB Troy Taylor and return it for the pick six for the final points.

Humboldt will host the Martensville Royals at 1:00pm on Saturday at Glenn Hall Park in the provincial quarter-finals. A win would see the Mohawks remain at home for the semi-finals against either Warman or Broadview.

On the other side of the bracket, Melfort visits Fort Qu'Appelle, and Esterhazy hosts John Paul II out of North Battleford.

In the 2A conference, the defending champion Clavet Cougars host the Lumsden Devils, Delisle welcomes in Foam Lake, Shaunavon is home to Tisdale, and Melville plays Nipawin.

A light week in six man football had Wynyard defeat Kamsack 46-18, Watson fell 73-6 to Preeceville, and in a playoff game, Raymore ensured a spot in provincials with a 31-20 win over Ituna.

In 1A conference play for the provincial quarters, Raymore will host Carrot River with the winner playing either Gull Lake or Hanley. On the other side, Hague hosts Southey, and Caronport welcomes in Kerrobert.

The Watrous Wildcats begin the quest for a fourth straight provincial title against Rosetown in the 2A bracket. The winner of that game meets either Rosthern or Kamsack. Wynyard plays host to Birch Hills, and Hafford meets Assiniboia.

All games are played on Saturday.

For the second straight year, and fifth time in six seasons, the Saskatoon Hilltops have won the Prairie Football Conference in the Canadian Junior Football League after they defeated the Calgary Colts 38-16 on Sunday.

Following a slow start offensively that saw them lead 3-0 after the first quarter, the Hilltops offensive line started blowing open holes for running back Logan Fischer, who ran for four touchdowns in the win.

Humboldt's Drayke Unger plays a key role on that offensive line, as he is the team's starting left guard. He also doubles as a fullback in jumbo formations, typically used on the goal line.

Another former HCI Mohawk also had a strong game, as defensive tackle Tyrell Hering caused some issues for the Colts offensive line. Hering had a pass knockdown, as well as a couple hurries on quarterback John Kiesman. He also took down the Colts pivot for a sack.

Connor Guillet had a pair of tackles in the win as well.

The Hilltops will meet the Okanagan Sun in the Canadian Bowl in Saskatoon on November 7.

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies are still kicking despite another loss, as they fell 41-36 to the UBC Thunderbirds.

With a record of 2-5, the Huskies can still qualify for the playoffs if they defeat the Regina Rams this week, and the Alberta Golden Bears lose to the Calgary Dinos.

In the loss to UBC, Wynyard's Lance Bashutsky had one and a half tackles, as well as four kick returns for 74 yards, and one return of 53 yards on a missed UBC field goal.

The Huskies and Rams meet Friday night at 7:00 in Regina.

Humboldt's Kelly Bates and the Simon Fraser Clan continue to search for their first win of 2015, dropping a 37-26 decision at home to the Western Oregon Wolves.

The Clan led at half 20-17 before the Wolves outscored them 20-6 in the second half to take the game.

Simon Fraser will head to the Redwood Bowl in Arcata, California, home of the fittingly named Humboldt State Jacks on Saturday for their third to last game of the season.
