The HCI Mohawks are aiming for a quick start to 2015, while also gaining a slight measure of redemption, as they host the Clavet Cougars.

In November, the Cougars downed Humboldt 19-11 in claiming the Provincial title, and due to a change in classification this year, this will be the only meeting of the season between the two teams.

Kickoff at Glenn Hall Park is at 4:00pm on Friday.

While still a week away from regular season play, the three-time defending provincial champion Watrous Wildcats will have a crossover game on Friday afternoon, as they head to Melfort to play the Comets.

A unique game, as Watrous plays 6-man football, while Melfort is in the same conference with the Mohawks in 9-man.

On the schedule for 6-man action this week is the Raymore Rebels heading to Ituna to take on the Trojans. Most teams will get started on September 11th.

The CJFL season is well underway in 2015, and once again the Saskatoon Hilltops are out to a hot start, sitting at 3-0 with two wins over Winnipeg, and one against Calgary.

Of course, as has been the case for many years, the Toppers have pulled players from the area, and presently have five HCI Mohawks, as well as one Watrous Wildcat on the team.

Defensive tackle Dillon Buckle has tallied nine tackles, including three sacks, as well as recovering a blocked punt in the endzone for a touchdown.

Fellow fourth year defensive lineman Tyrell Hering picked up his first sack of the season on Sunday against Winnipeg. He, along with second year Topper Connor Guillet have five tackles for the year. Guillet also recorded his first QB takedown on Sunday.

First year Hilltop Tristan Hering is part of a strong defensive front with Saskatoon, and as such doesn't see full - or rotation action quite yet. Hering did however record his first tackle on Sunday.

Offensive lineman Drayke Unger is in his fourth year, and continues to see time on special teams, as well as being a mainstay along the offensive line.

Watrous lineman Ryder Klisowsky is on the practice roster.

The Hilltops welcome in their provincial rivals from Regina for a massive tilt on Saturday night at SMF Field. Watrous defensive back Landon Bells is a member of the Thunder practice squad.

Wynyard's Josh Doidge is in his fourth year with the Winnipeg Rifles. A linebacker and special teams captain for the team, he has seven tackles and a forced fumble thus far in 2015. Winnipeg's roster also has Humboldt's Sam Schlitz, who has yet to see game action.

Winnipeg welcomes in the Calgary Colts in Week 4, aiming for their first win of the season.

Canada West play gets underway on Friday night in the CIS.

The Saskatchewan Huskies are expected to once again contend among the top teams in the league. They open up against the Manitoba Bisons at Griffiths Stadium.

Saskatchewan enters the season ranked 8th in the polls, while Manitoba - the defending Canada West champs - are 10th.

Wynyard's Lance Bashutsky is in his third year with the Dogs.

In the Queen City, the Regina Rams welcome in the Alberta Golden Bears for their first tilt of the new year.

With a new head coach in longtime CFL assistant Mike Gibson, the Rams are locking to make a large impact.

They added Watrous' Liam Jensen, and Naicam's Dexter Dauk to the team. Both are offensive linemen.

Of the many interesting moves in the football world, one of the bigger headlines was made when the BC Lions did not retain the services of Humboldt's Kelly Bates.

Bates served as the team's Running Backs Coach and CFL Draft Coordinator, but new head coach Jeff Tedford elected to move in a different direction.

As such, Bates landed himself a job in the NCAA, being named the new head coach of the Simon Fraser Clan. The spot at SFU opened up after Jacques Chapdelaine became the new offensive coordinator of the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

In his first season as sideline boss, Bates and his team will get their first test on September 12th, as they visit the Western Oregon Wolves.

The continuous presence of Bates remains in the area, as he hosts the Kelly Bates Football Camp, which will return for an 11th year in 2016.
