Perhaps a bit of a cool off was in order for the young gentleman standing outside of the Muenster School mid-afternoon Saturday in shorts and a t-shirt. One of several players participating in the annual Muenster Co-ed Volleyball Tournament, he walked out of the cold exterior, back into the gym and awaited the start of the next game.

It's a shared passion for the sport that unites the participants of varying ages to the tournament.

"We encourage everybody to come out for the love of the game. It's all about playing volleyball and enjoying it," says coach, organizer, and participant, Jewel Varga.

High-school age athletes teamed up with older adults to form dynamic teams for the event, hailing from surrounding areas such as Wakaw, Cudworth, Annaheim, Humboldt, and Muenster.

Although prize money is to be awarded to winning teams, Varga says that isn't the main motivation at this kind of tournament. She says it's more for the fun of it and the love for the sport.

The tournament is a fundraiser for the Muenster Volleyball Club, which also hosts weekly drop-in practices. Varga says the proceeds will help cover the costs of sending the older team to nationals this year.

The athletes were shown support from family members who volunteered their time and skills by making and serving delicious treats in the kitchen.

Varga says the club would like to extend a thank you to the volunteers and spectators for their support.
