For the first time in six years, there is a new champion coming out of the Master Women's Curling Championship.

Wadena's Delores Syrota and her foursome of Bev Krasowski, Donna Liebrecht and Sylvia Broad captured the provincial title on Sunday, defeating Wendy Leach 6-2.

The win for Syrota ends a run of five straight championships for Merle Kopach, who lost to Leach in the semi-final.

Syrota went 3-1 in the round robin to finish first in their pool and then defeated Leach in the page 1/1 playoff game to advance to the final.

Representing Saskatchewan, Syrota will now take part in the Canadian championships, which will be held in Guelph, Ontario in April.

In the men's tournament, another Wadena resident came up just short of a provincial win.

Verne Anderson played second for Eugene Hritzuk's Saskatoon rink. They lost in the final 6-4.

Masters play began in 2000 and is for those age 60 and over.
