It was an all Saskatchewan affair in the finals at The Western Canadian Softball Championships in Kelowna, B.C. last week.

The U16 team from Wadena faced off against Shellbrook in the finals, who was the other Saskatchewan representative in the tournament, after finishing 4-0 and securing first place in the round robin. They were joined by two teams from Terrace and Barriere representing British Columbia and one team from Edmonton, Alberta.

It was a high scoring contest in the championship game as Shellbrook ended up defeating Wadena 14-11, as coach Darin Faubert stated was an uncharacteristic score, not consistent with their routine defensive skills. "Most of our games are very low scoring." , said Faubert. "We pride ourselves on great D and pitching. The hitting was fantastic, a lot of positional hitting."

Wadena carried a three-run lead into the 7th inning before Shellbrook scored seven runs and ended up winning by three.

Shelbrook and Wadena play in the same Saskatchewan Bantam League throughout the year and although the team members all know each other and consider each other friends its safe to say the rivalry may have gotten a boost and that some high-level ball is being played here in the province of Saskatchewan.
