A strong debut season has led Humboldt Broncos goalie Jacob Wassermann to the SJHL's Rookie of the Year award.

Wassermann was named co-winner of the award along with Weyburn Red Wings forward Cade Kowalski.

"I give credit to my team infront of me. They make it easy every night and I couldn't do anything without them," Wassermann said. "I can just go out and play and know that they're going to give me support and every shift on the ice they're giving it their all so I can work hard right behind them."

The 18-year-old Humboldt product has quickly made an impact with his hometown team, posting 14 wins along with a 2.69 goals-against-average and a .907 save percentage.

His wins total would certainly be higher if not for the Western Hockey League's Regina Pats calling him up to dress for a few games - including one start, which he won.

Wassermann has formed a dangerous 1-2 combination in net for the Broncos along with Parker Tobin, who came to the team in December via trade.

Wassermann says that Tobin has been good for him in keeping a healthy competition and pushing each other every day.

"Tobes is a great goalie partner to have. I love working with him every day. He brings a year of experience, so he knows what it's like, and he gives me a couple of tips here and there."

The Broncos wrapped up the regular season on Tuesday night against Notre Dame and will have nine days off before the playoffs begin.

Wassermann says the Broncos have as good a chance as anyone for a long playoff run.

"I'm feeling really confident. Our second half has been super strong, and with the group of guys we have in our locker room, I'm really looking forward to it."

The Broncos open the playoffs on March 16 at Melfort.
