The Watrous Winterhawks Senior hockey team have achieved a double banner year.

Patrick Ullyott scored in the first overtime period, as the Hawks edged Gull Lake 3-2 to sweep their best-of-three series two games to none.

"I'm seriously just speechless right now. It's like... yeah. I was so tired at the end, I don't even know if I was thinking. I saw a stick and I shot for it and it went in," explained Captain Woody Klassen following the game.

It was quite a roller coaster last few minutes for the homegrown Klassen, who was hit from behind into the boards to put Watrous on the power play in the extra frame.

After slowly making his way off the ice and sitting out for a brief period of time, Klassen showed his leadership, sending a shot towards the goal that was redirected home by Ullyott.

Two championships in one year for the Winterhawks.

Following a scoreless opening period, Trent Campbell opened the scoring late in the second period with a pair of goals 43 seconds apart.

Gull Lake responded in the front half of the third period, with two goals in three minutes, to even the game, before Ullyott's overtime winner came at the 3:24 mark of the extra session.

Klassen was exuberant about the fan support following the game, saying that it was encouraging to see so many people out to watch the Winterhawks take the provincial title.

"You see the crowd today and from the beginning of the year, I have been dreaming of this outcome. I knew we had a special team," he said. "I almost wanted to guarantee we were going to do this, but I didn't have the guts to do it."

It was just 12 days prior that Watrous claimed their first banner of the hockey season, defeating the Lanigan Pirates in four games to win the Long Lake Hockey League.

Klassen says it has been a special time for him and his family, playing alongside brother Sam.

"It's just so much fun playing with my brother and with this group of guys," he noted. "The core of us have been together for a good five years and some of these guys have been playing for 10 to 12 years. They come and play every night and it is fun to be a part of."

Family is a strong tradition in small town Saskatchewan, and Klassen is hoping to see that continue for years to come.

"My goal is - we want to have a winning tradition here in Watrous again, and to bring out fans like this, and to grow Senior hockey in Watrous again."

Brennan Duncan had another strong game in goal for the Winterhawks, stopping 31 saves to secure the win.

Prior to the Senior Hawks hitting the ice, the Peewee Hawks skated to a heartbreaking overtime loss to Wapella in the provincial final.

Watrous trailed by two goals entering the second game of the two-game total goal series.

After leading 7-4 in the third period, Wapella was able to pull within two, 'tying' the series before winning in overtime.

While Watrous technically won the game 7-6, they lost the overall goal series by an 11-10 margin.

The Watrous Peewee's lost in heartbreaking fashion in the provincial final.
