Dr. Kim Hoshizaki of the Animal Health Clinic of Humboldt says that despite the long, cold winter, this calving season has been busier than the previous few years.

"We've done more calvings this year. It's only when it becomes complicated or if they require a c-section, that's when people will call for help."

Dr. Hoshizaki notes that it's really important for people to know when to call for help.

"If you have a heifer that's been pushing really hard for 20-30 minutes and you're not seeing any progress, you really need to get in there and check things out and/or help out."

She explains that if hours are let go by, the cow can become so exhausted that she can't stand up, and then it becomes a huge risk for the cow and the calf as well.

Dr. Hoshizaki says it can be very stressful for the animals, and they will die.

"Sooner is always better", Dr. Hoshizaki says, "and if you're unsure how to proceed, it's always best to contact a veterinarian."
