A popular golf tournament in Watrous and Manitou Beach is continuing on, after it looked like last year may have been its end.

The GJM Charity Golf Tournament is back for 2017, albeit under a slightly tweaked name.

The tournament was run by the Manson family and is now being taken over by the Watrous-Manitou Heritage Centre and will be renamed the GJM Heritage Memorial Golf Tournament.

It will take place on Friday, July 28 at the Manitou Beach Golf Club.

Al Mosewich of the fundraising committee and Watrous Rotary Club explained the background behind the tournament.

"Garry (Manson) passed away about ten years ago from cancer. It was a fundraiser initially for cancer," he said. "It has been a long-running, successful tournament."

Mosewich added that since last year was originally going to be the last one, there are many who aren't aware that it is moving forward.

"A lot of people were under the impression that it is over and don't know about it. The Heritage board were looking to come up with a fundraiser on an ongoing basis," he said. "They approached the Manson family and asked if it would be okay to continue it on."

Over $160,000 was raised for the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency and Hope Cancer Help Centre during the ten years that the tournament has been on.

Funds will now be directed to the Heritage Centre and their fundraising and planning efforts. The Rotary Club is chipping in this year with a shadow committee to help ease the transition.

Mosewich says that registration will end on Sunday and encourages golfers to sign up quickly, adding that it makes for an enjoyable weekend with the Watrous Fun Run on the Saturday and garden tours on Sunday.

Registration can be done by calling Arlene Gegner (306-946-3847). Mosewich says that any sponsorship or prize donations can still be made as well by contacting Dan Mierau (306-946-2869).
