During Humboldt City Council's lone August meeting, September was declared an awareness month for a pair of reasons.

Mayor Rob Muench designated the month to be known as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Ovarian Cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer deaths among women and over half of the cases are fatal within five years.

Muench also declared September to be Big Brothers Big Sisters Month, to coincide with the national designation.

The Humboldt chapter continues to accept new mentors for their "littles". Boys wait two to three years before being matched.

Pride Week falls from August 20 to 26 in Humboldt. A flag raising ceremony is set to take place during noon on Monday, August 21.

Making an appearance to speak was Ricardo Marcil of Lube Stop Systems. Marcil explained a proposal to renovate the former Quality Tire building along Highway 5 west.

The new building would become a Lube Stop service centre.

Council also approved a new idea to come up with an Official District Plan for the city and rural municipality.
