The winter blues have a tendency to set in over January and February as the forecast is typically taken over by clouds and cold temperatures.

Counseling Professional Sharon Harriman with Renewed Hope Counseling in Humboldt said isolating yourself indoors can cause depression.

She provided a few tips on how to overcome the winter blues.

"Another thing is to challenge the negative thinking, a lot of times whether it's dealing with physical illness or mental illness we're so prone to focus on the negative instead of the positives in our lives everyday. Sometimes it's good not to always be looking at the negative.

Proper nutrition and starting an exercise regime can also be helpful when feeling down, adequate sleep and avoiding alcohol will also prove beneficial.

"Seasonal effective disorder really effects a lot of people when we don't have sunlight," explained Harriman.

Major life decisions and changes can also bring on depression, along with the lose of a loved one or job, changing schools and mid life crisis.

There are services available right here in Humboldt and it is important to get a hold of a counselor or your doctor if you or someone you know may be battling depression.

Mental Health and Renewed Hope Counseling at Partner's Family Services are a couple of options when seeking mental health assistance.
