A few members of mining company BHP Billiton's environmental team led a presentation on Friday afternoon during an open house in LeRoy.

Over the past couple years they have held similar sessions before taking some time away.

Ken Smith is their Manager of Community Development explains more regarding the purpose behind the meet and greets.

"As we did previously, just to get some general information out, we focus in on the areas of environment which we did today. Local procurement, primarily community development but also to use the opportunity to provide periodic updates on our Jansen potash project."

During the presentation they outlined their 'habitat compensation program that includes the restoration of 76 hectares.

One local landowner close to the site had some questions regarding their water management. A productive discussion followed and he seemed satisfied with the plan and response.

"Absolutely, that's why we're here to have those questions if somebody has that they have the people that are here with the experience and expertise to be able to answer some of the questions related to that," Smith said about the dialogue.

General questions are more common as Smith explains.

"The big one is around when things are going to be advancing at the Jansen project as you know. It gives an opportunity to let people know what we're doing out at the site in terms our development of the two shafts, how many people are out there at the current time and some of the activities that we're undertaking presently."

In late March BHP representatives toured 13 local leaders around the site as well, a couple even took them up on their invitation to stay at the now complete 2,500 population 'discovery camp.'

There is no plan as of yet for another open house but Smith added if any opportunity arises to share some information they would make that accessible.
